Art and Love Are the Same

Birthdays, anniversaries, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and we just celebrated Valentine’s Day. A lot of people say that holidays are becoming so commercialized by mass production gifts that can be found everywhere. Some prefer handmade gifts for their loved ones. So which is better? Handmade or ready-made ones? What are the benefits of spending some extra attention in crafting, making your own gifts?

One of the gifts that I would always cherish, was from my sister for my 21st birthday. Mailed me, an 8 x 10"`32  picture of me with a certain celebrity, that she took when she was visiting. She developed the picture herself in her college darkroom, handwritten on the side, decorated it, framed and sent it to me. I still consider that one of the best things I have ever received.

It might just be a simple thing such as a handmade card, getting the kids to bake and decorate their own butter cake, but that act itself more often than not means so much more that.

Here are some reasons why you should consider hand made gifts;

1. They are personal and special

Kids and adults alike do have to put the time and effort when choosing to make a handmade gift. You think about what the other person likes, their favorite color, animal, favorite scent. It is intimate and special.

2. Made with love and thoughtfulness

A handmade gift shows the receiver is thought of and the maker knows them well to make something that suits their personalities or hobbies. When you make something, you leave a part of yourself in it. When you are finished creating, you take pride in the work partly because you see yourself in it. It is also a good empathy-building exercise for children, thinking of others.

“Art and love are the same things: It’s the process of seeing yourself in things that are not you.”Chuck Klosterman

3. Handmade items are one of a kind. No two ideas are alike. Isn’t it more fun to be different in gift giving?

So go ahead … surprise someone … with something handmade from your heart.

Be it a card making, origami flowers, writing a poem or decorating sugar cookies with “I love you”.

Gift giving is about self-expression by creating something special and sharing it.

p.s bonus points of you can tell us..who that person in with me in that picture
